This online course (or webinar) introduces you to the procedures used by proofreaders in publishing firms and corporate communications departments. It is designed for people who have little or no publishing experience but do have a solid grasp of grammar, usage, spelling, and punctuation.

What the Course Covers

This course focuses on the knowledge and skills that you will need to proofread books, magazines, newsletters, and other published materials. Topics include hard-copy and on-screen procedures, tools and resources, and the principles of editorial style. For a more detailed list of topics, see the course outline.

You need access to a desktop computer or mobile device with Adobe Flash Player installed. Most computers and many tablets and smartphones come loaded with this free software, and it can also be downloaded from the Adobe website. If you wish to do the exercises, you will need a printer and writing implements.

The course is divided into four 50-minute sessions conducted via Adobe Connect. After you register, you will receive an email with instructions about logging on for the live sessions. Each session begins at 6:30 p.m. PST/9:30 p.m. EST. Logging on and participating are easy. The live sessions offer an opportunity to ask the instructor questions and to interact with the other students. If you miss a session, however, you can watch the recording of it, which will be available for two weeks. Handouts will be available for download until two weeks after the end of the course.
