Questions and Answers — Writing Effective Author Queries

If I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, would it be better to enroll in the Editcetera workshop The Art of Querying rather than to take this course by mail?

The querying workshop is not offered every session. When it is offered, it covers essentially the same material as this correspondence course. If you find it easier to learn new skills in a classroom, working with an instructor and other students, probably the workshop is a better choice for you. Studying by yourself gives you more flexibility, but it also requires more discipline. For some students, of course, the choice will depend largely on personal issues (work schedule, distance, family arrangements).

Why is the correspondence course more expensive than the workshop The Art of Querying?

Students in the correspondence course do three exercises that they self-correct and send a final assignment to the instructor for critique and comment, whereas students in the workshop self-correct the three exercises with the instructor in class. The correspondence course fee also reflects the cost of producing and mailing the course materials.

Will completing this course enable me to get a job in editing?

This course covers querying authors as you edit manuscripts. It is designed to improve your skills in this area, once you already have some knowledge and training in editorial work. It is not a course in editing as a whole, and it does not offer guidance on finding work. Writing effective queries is one way to satisfy clients and merit repeat business, however.

What is the refund policy on course fees?

The course fee is not refundable.

When I enroll, how soon will I receive my course materials?

The course materials will be sent by U.S. First Class Mail as soon as your registration has been processed. You should receive them within 10 working days. Allow 5 extra working days for registrations sent between December 22 and January 1.

How much time will I have to complete the course?

You can work at your own pace, but your final assignment will not be accepted for review by the instructor more than one year after you register for the course.
