Questions and Answers — Copyediting Fiction
If I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, would it be better to enroll in the Editcetera workshop Copyediting Fiction rather than to take this course by mail?
The fiction copyediting workshop is not offered every session. When it is offered, it covers essentially the same material as this correspondence course. If you find it easier to learn new skills in a classroom, working with an instructor and other students, probably the workshop is a better choice for you. Studying by yourself gives you more flexibility, but it also requires more discipline. For some students, of course, the choice will depend largely on personal issues (work schedule, distance, family arrangements).
Why is the correspondence course more expensive than the workshop Copyediting Fiction?
Students in the correspondence course do three assignments and send the last one to the instructor for critique and comment, whereas students in the workshop self-correct two assignments with the instructor in class. The correspondence course fee also reflects the cost of producing and mailing the course materials.
Will completing this course enable me to get a job editing fiction?
This course presents the information you need to copyedit fiction, and it offers some tips on finding work (in-house and freelance). However, your success in finding jobs will also depend on (1) your copyediting experience and skill, (2) your job-hunting and networking skills, (3) the breadth of your contacts, (4) your résumé-writing, interviewing, and test-taking abilities, (5) employment opportunities in your area (for in-house work), and (6) luck.
What is the refund policy on course fees?
The course fee is not refundable.
When I enroll, how soon will I receive my course materials?
The course materials will be sent by U.S. First Class Mail as soon as your registration has been processed. You should receive them within 10 working days. Allow 5 extra working days for registrations sent between December 22 and January 1.
The instructors were approachable, engaging, and very knowledgeable about the subjects![]()
