Questions and Answers — The ABCs of Copyediting
If I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, would it be better to enroll in one of Editcetera’s introductory copyediting workshops rather than to take this course by mail?
Probably. This correspondence course and the introductory copyediting workshops (Basic Copyediting and The Versatile Copyeditor) cover the same material, but most people find it easier to learn new skills in a classroom, working with an instructor and other students. Studying by yourself gives you more flexibility, but it also requires more discipline. For some students, of course, the choice will depend largely on personal issues (work schedule, commute time, family arrangements).
Will completing this course enable me to get a job in publishing?
This course will introduce the basics of copyediting, but your success in finding a job will depend on (1) your education and training, (2) your job-hunting and networking skills, (3) your work history and experience, (4) your interview skills and test-taking abilities, (5) employment opportunities in your area, and (6) luck.
Will this course prepare me to copyedit online?
The course will help you acquire the copyediting skills you need, but it does not discuss computer hardware or software, online protocols, or other hands-on issues.
What is the refund policy on course fees?
For this correspondence course, the course fee is not refundable.
When I enroll, how soon will I receive my course materials?
Your course guide and answer key booklet will be sent by U.S. Priority Mail as soon as your registration has been processed. You should receive them within 10 working days. Allow 5 extra working days for registrations sent between December 22 and January 1.
The instructors were approachable, engaging, and very knowledgeable about the subjects![]()
