Questions and Answers — The ABCs of Proofreading

If I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, would it be better to enroll in the Editcetera Proofreading A to Z workshop rather than to take this course by mail?

Probably. This correspondence course and the Proofreading A to Z workshop cover the same material, but most people find it easier to learn new skills in a classroom, working with an instructor and other students. Studying by yourself gives you more flexibility, but it also requires more discipline. For some students, of course, the choice will depend largely on personal issues (work schedule, distance, family arrangements).

Why is the correspondence course more expensive than the Proofreading A to Z workshop?

Students in the correspondence course mail three assignments to the instructor for critique and comment, whereas students in the workshop self-correct their assignments in class. The fee for the correspondence course reflects the additional time the instructor will devote to answering questions mailed in by students. Finally, the cost of producing and mailing the correspondence course materials is factored into the course fee.

Will completing this course enable me to get a job in publishing?

This course will introduce the basics of proofreading, but your success in finding a job will depend on (1) your education and training, (2) your job-hunting and networking skills, (3) your work history and experience, (4) your interview skills and test-taking abilities, (5) employment opportunities in your area, and (6) luck.

What is the refund policy on course fees?

For this correspondence course, the course fee is not refundable.

When I enroll, how soon will I receive my course materials?

Your course materials will be sent by FedEx 2-day service or U.S. Priority Mail as soon as your registration has been processed. You should receive them within 10 working days after we receive your registration. Allow 5 extra working days for registrations sent between December 22 and January 1.
