Instructor Karen Seriguchi

This online correspondence course focuses on the knowledge and skills that you will need to proofread books, magazines, and other published materials. Topics include hard-copy and on-screen procedures, tools and resources, and the principles of editorial style. Our new format allows you to work at your convenience.

The following topics will be covered:

  • What proofreaders do, what skills they need to do it, and what equipment they use
  • How proofreaders mark up a page and how they communicate with the editor and production team
  • Why proofreaders sometimes end up copyediting
  • What proofreaders should know about typesetting

This course includes four sessions delivered as PowerPoint presentations, each to be downloaded at the participant's convenience within the eight-week time frame. Students complete three sets of exercises, self-correcting the first two and submitting the last one to the instructor to receive feedback and an evaluation. In addition, students have two 20-minute consultations with the instructor.

Karen Seriguchi is an award-winning editor and copyeditor with extensive Web, book, magazine, newspaper, and corporate publication experience.
