Distinguished editors come together to discuss the variety of editorial roles in book publishing today—what each type of job involves, what skills and temperaments best prepare you for the job, where you might find that job, and how much you might earn doing it. Careers represented include copyeditor, proofreader, developmental editor, production editor, managing editor, and acquisitions editor. Questions and answers follow short presentations by panelists.

Zipporah Collins is a founder of Editcetera and a freelance copyeditor and production editor. Sheryl Fullerton is executive editor of Jossey-Bass Publishers. Scott Norton is director of editing, design, and production at the University of California Press and is author of Developmental Editing: A Handbook for Freelancers, Authors, and Publishers. Marilyn Schwartz is managing editor of the University of California Press. Melissa Stein is a freelance editor and writer and a member of Editcetera.
