Successful editing projects depend on gaining your author’s trust by communicating clearly and diplomatically from start to finish. In this workshop, we’ll explore both the basics and the subtleties of the editor/author relationship, from establishing goals, parameters, procedures, and priorities to crafting effective queries and editorial memos that will defuse defensiveness and encourage authors to be receptive to—and even excited about!—revisions.

Melissa Stein has worked in publishing for more than 20 years. She performs project management, copywriting, and all levels of editing for publishers, packagers, corporations, advertising agencies, nonprofit organizations, and individual writers. Her clients have included Ten Speed Press, Pomegranate, Cleis Press, HarperSanFrancisco, Golden Gate University, Doremus, United Way, and Running Press. She has taught editing for Editcetera and UC Berkeley Extension and writing at UC Davis, leads on-site workshops, and provides one-on-one tutoring.
