Today, English is written and read throughout the world, by both native and nonnative speakers. In this workshop, we identify and apply the language principles and writing strategies that support the production of clear, concise, coherent English that works everywhere for everybody. Conversely, we identify and learn how to avoid the pitfalls that create communication problems.

You will participate actively in discussions and activities. No prereading or homework is required. However, you are encouraged to bring examples and questions to share with your colleagues and to purchase and bring to class John Kohl’s The Global English Style Guide: Writing Clear, Translatable Documentation for a Global Market (SAS Press, 2008).

Susan Ledford is a reading and writing specialist, working in education as a teacher and curriculum developer since 1967 and in the high-tech industry as a technical editor and writing consultant since 1997. She has taught technical-communication workshops on various topics for San Jose State University, the University of Montana, Oracle University, NetApp University, Hyperion Solutions, and the Society for Technical Communication. She is currently employed as editorial lead, NetApp University, NetApp, Inc.
